Cloth Diaper Sizing Guide

Finding the right fit is everything when it comes to cloth diapers, a well fitting diaper prevents leaks, keeps baby comfortable, and makes your cloth diapering journey a whole lot easier. This guide walks you through sizing by weight and stage, explains how our one-size diapers grow with your baby, and shares tips on how absorbency and insert layering affect fit.

Sizing by Baby Weight & Stage

Newborn (5–12 lbs)

Newborns have tiny legs and a narrow rise, so fit is especially important in these early weeks. Our Renew Premium Hybrid Newborn Cloth Diaper is designed specifically for this stage. It features a trim, contoured fit that works beautifully on smaller babies without the bulk of a one-size diaper.

  • Best fit: Renew Premium Hybrid Newborn
  • Tip: Snug leg gussets are your best friend for preventing blowouts. Check that you can fit two fingers at the waistband but no gaps at the legs.

Infant / One-Size (7–35+ lbs)

This is where our one-size diapers shine. With multiple rise snaps and adjustable waist settings, a single diaper can take your baby from around 8 lbs all the way through potty training. Most families transition to one-size diapers around 10–12 lbs when the fit becomes more consistent.

Toddler / Pre-Potty Training (25–35+ lbs)

As your toddler becomes more active, you'll likely move to the largest rise setting and a wider waist snap. Our one-size diapers are designed to accommodate this stage comfortably.

  • Best fit: Essentials Pocket
  • Tip: If you're seeing compression marks or the rise feels short, it may be time to evaluate fit, but most babies fit comfortably in our one-size diapers through potty training.

How Our One-Size Diapers Grow with Your Baby

All of our one-size diapers feature a five adjustable rise snap system that adjusts the length of the diaper from front to back. Here's how it works:

  • Smallest rise, 5 (snapped up fully): Best for babies 7–10 lbs
  • Rise 4 : 8-15lbs
  • Middle rise: Best for babies 16–28 lbs
  • Rise 2: 22-37lbs
  • Largest rise (fully unsnapped): Best for toddlers 27lbs+

The waist snaps also adjust to give you a custom fit at every stage. You should always be able to fit two fingers flat at the waistband, snug but not tight.

How Absorbency & Insert Layering Affect Fit

The inserts you choose — and how many you layer — directly affect how a diaper fits. Here's what to keep in mind:

  • More inserts = more bulk. Adding a second insert for overnight use will add thickness between baby's legs. This is normal and expected, but if it's causing the legs to bow or the waist to gap, try a slimmer insert combination.
  • Trim inserts for daytime. A single bamboo viscose insert is usually plenty for daytime use and keeps the diaper trim under clothing.
  • Boost for overnight. For overnight, try layering a bamboo viscose insert with a hemp cotton style booster for maximum absorbency without excessive bulk. Leaking with inserts? Try 360 coverage like pre-flats.
  • Check leg fit after stuffing. Always check that the leg elastics still lay flat against baby's thighs after you've stuffed the diaper. If the elastics are being pushed out by the insert, try folding the insert differently or switching to a trimmer option.
